Look. It's blatantly set up this way: Sissy-->Scorpio-->Martin-->Caroline, with Don as the wild card who's half-jealous and half-in love with everybody! There's a BLATANT generational parallel there with Lotus-->Howard, with Don and Caroline subbing in for Rake and Orion, respectively. Now, if you really wanted to talk subtext you could talk about the Rake/Orion business, which is a whole other cup of tea, but for my money, I think the best bet is on the generational parallels being broken so that Scorpio chooses not to follow in his Nosferatu's footsteps and Martin chooses Caroline over the more maternal Sissy. As for what happens to Sissy and Don, I'm not sure, but maybe they can live out their old age keeping house for one another.

Well, Colin has proposed an interesting suggestion: Martin/Scorpio. I think if one is reading the subtext of the book, there's an interesting possibility for Scorpio to be gay. He did attend that party with Candy Calverson, but we've seen very little otherwise to suggest that Scorpio has any interest in Candy. Scorpio does have an unhealthy fixation with Martin. However, I don't see any of that coming from Martin.
Martin has bigger things to worry about than Scorpio. Scorpio is a little pathetic that way. Let's not forget the fact that Scorpio is, frankly, nasty. Is this something Martin could get past? Could Martin be the key to Scorpio's redemption?
I'd not like to see a Scorpio who changes himself to suit anyone, be it Sissy or Martin. If Martin could only be with Scorpio due to Scorpio changing his personality, then I think this is a lovematch that is destined for failure. Scorpio can't change who he is for Martin. Martin is unlikely to become more accepting of Martin.
And yet, I think they could balance each other out. But Scorpio has been so hurtful to Caroline, and we all know Don hates him.

I am uncertain if redeemed is the word I would use. I wouldn't like to see him follow in the footsteps of his mother, certainly. However, I would like to see him become his own person. I don't think that necessary calls for redemption; after all, Scorpio really hasn't done anything. He is a bully, true, but it does not make him evil. There are lots of bullies. Look around Hogwarts if you want an example. It isn't always a question of redeemed or not redeemed.
I don't know if I see it in the comics themselves, but I could see the possibility for it and find it intriguing.

I know what you mean but it just seems a waste of time to analyse such far-fetched subtext or whatever. I mean, in this case, don't you think Scorpio/Don makes more sense? They're always fighting and Don is always talking about Scorpio. Well now I'm freaking myself out.

Okay I'm done with freaking out. Well, I don't think Scorpio is evil at all, that's why I think he can be redeemed from the bad-boy image. I think there's something better deep inside him, and his mother too! She does love him even if she shows it in wrong ways, so they can be redeemed together. Just my type of happy ending.

Well I reckon you're right, Scorpio is rather scary sometimes 'cos he just can't get over things, but I don't really see that as being gay. We don't get to see enough Scorpio to be able to judge his... you know. Sexual preferences. And I don't think Martin likes him, anyway. Why would he? Scorpio bullies Martin's friends! And you're right, Don hates him! It just wouldn't work out. But, it might be kind of interesting, too. It would make Martin more interesting, anyway!

Well, Scorpio clearly feels inadequate in comparison to Martin. I, for one, adore Martin. And I think there is a likeable human being inside Scorpio. Not a kind-hearted one, perhaps, but one that could be brought out. I think Martin is the only one who truly has the power to hurt Scorpio, and that says a lot.

I reckon they would be good friends, then, and I wouldn't mind if they fell in love, but I think Martin is heterosexual and that we don't really know enough about Scorpio to decide on what gender he likes. But then again, I always thought I liked boys, too, so I reckon I wouldn't be too horrified if they fell in love!! But I still think Martin wouldn't be able to overlook the fact that Scorpio's really mean about... well, everything. And if he would be able to, then he is even more boring than I thought.

I agree, it's tricky. I don't know that Martin is definitely heterosexual; I think Scorpio is more likely to be gay. However, these are comics, so it's not entirely likely any of this would ever be depicted. I just find it interesting to discuss in theory.

Uh, hi Lisa. i like all this. i don't really agree with the gay parts but it's kind of interesting, i guess. epecially this part--
Martin has bigger things to worry about than Scorpio. Scorpio is a little pathetic that way. Let's not forget the fact that Scorpio is, frankly, nasty. Is this something Martin could get past? Could Martin be the key to Scorpio's redemption?
I don't think scorpio really thinks he has a chance with Martin, being as Martin's pretty much not gay and all--but maybe if he really starts to love Martin Scorpio could change on his own. I mean, he mostly is mean to Caroline because she's a know-it-all and he's threatened by her, but he can grow out of that in time.
I think Don hates Scorpio because he's jealous of him just the way he's jealous of Martin. Maybe when Don betrays Martin to Dr. Littledeath--and we know he's going to, the signs are obvious--Scorpio will unexpectedly come to their side and offer to help Martin out. So that way Don betrays Martin and predictably gets the axe while Scorpio gets to be redeemed and take the place of the sidekick role for Martin.
It might not work. I mean, that kinda defeats the whole premise that the bad guy gets redeemed right before he gets killed, and it would be a lot more fitting with the dashing romantic Scorpio image to have some kind of dramatic final death scene where he confesses his love to Martin just before he breathes his last.
That'd be--kinda cool actually. But it won't happen. Killing off Don and Scorpio would just be too much, and there's no way Don's gonna make it through the series alive. He's a goner for sure.
