Attention, Hogwarts.
I received a most disconcerting letter from the parents of Mister Dean Thomas this morning and the rest of the day has been spent discussing the content of the letter with Professor Dumbledore, Mr. Thomas and various members of the staff. I believe we've come to an unanimous decision. However, before we get into that, I think it's only fair that all the students are informed of the actual contents of the letter.

Mr. Thomas displayed great Gryffindor courage in writing to his parents about his relationship with his best friend that has blossomed beyond platonic friendship. Unfortunately, it would be a sore understatement to say that his parents were not too pleased with the news. In fact, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas have requested for their son to be sent home where he will be "kept away from the disgusting influences of his horrifically misguided professors".

In response to that, Professor Lupin came to my office in all his over-reactionary glory stating his willingness to leave because of parental complaints if the school wishes him to, without incident. He also suggested that it might be better for the children not to have such an influence, if their parents are going to object. Professor Black, on the other hand, displayed general indignance and growled on several occasions.

Now, while it is not up to me or even Albus to judge parents for their views, no matter how much we disagree with them, it is important to note that Dean Thomas is past the age of sixteen years and seven days, and by law, his parents don't have the rights to physically force him out of the school. Therefore, as long as Mr. Thomas remains a student of Hogwarts, he'll remain our responsibility. In addition, we feel it's best for Mr. Thomas to stay with in school grounds or with friends until his parents are ready to reason.

As a final note, I'm frankly appalled that parental rights are still wrongfully assumed to equate to the right for mindless prejudice these days. It may have been a while, but I do, however, remember romantic entanglements and affairs of the heart. No one, unless with the abuse of love potions, has the choice when it comes to who they fall in love with. Mr. Thomas, take 23 points for standing up for your beliefs and for remembering to knock 4 times before entering my office.

Professor,

I can't tell you how glad I am to hear this. From what I know of Dean and Seamus through my sister, they are funny, wonderful people. I am also touched that a Professor would put so much on the line for his students as Professor Lupin was ready to. Times like these, it doesn't matter which house you reside in.

Re:

Take 14 points, Miss Patil. Both of them have been excellent students and I loathe to see them go through such a time without support from their peers and professors.

Professor Lupin tried to resign?!

But...he's not going to, right?!

Re:

Don't worry yourself over it, Mr. Thomas. Professor Lupin isn't going anywhere. I've sent off a reply owl to your parents, just to let you know. I suppose we'll just have to wait and see for now. Do feel free to make full use of my office hours if need be.

All right, Professor? Hope the scorchmarks have come out of your curtains all right from that Whizzing Frisbee last year. Anyway, Fred and I were thinking that Hogwarts needs cheering up, especially Gryffindor. We'd like to place Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes -- and ourselves -- at your disposal if you agree with us.

I've grown rather fond of the scorchmarks, Mr. Weasley. The school, indeed, does need cheering up. If you could, owl me a proposal or anything you'll be willing to offer during my office hours. Much appreciated.
