Attn, Severus.
Did you give permission to Malfoy to steal Potter's socks?

Why, yes, Minerva. I did.

In fact, I believe the very words I used were:

'It stands to reason then, Mr Malfoy, that if you desire your socks to be returned to you then you yourself must do whatever it takes to reveal their location and the culprit behind their disappearance.'

Plainly, the words, 'Malfoy, go and waste your time stealing Potter's socks' are within if one can only look hard enough. Clearly my urging of Mr. Malfoy to see justice done implied I was advocating theft from a particular student. You are such a clever reader, Minerva. I doubt anyone else could have pulled my dastardly secret message from that comment.

Perhaps then you can explain why, upon being asked, Malfoy said, quite plainly, 'Professor Snape said I could.'

Mr. Malfoy has told me quite plainly that he 'borrowed' the socks from Potter. I fail to see the problem here, except, of course, for the repulsiveness inherent in allowing any item that has touched Potter's person within fifteen feet of one.

I am surprised you are not taking the theft of Mr. Malfoy's socks more seriously, Minerva. Socks are an issue near and dear to the heart of our august headmaster, as well you know. I am sure he would like you to pursue this matter with all due diligence.

I assure you that I am taking this theft quite as seriously as you are.

Excellent. Then I'm certain there's nothing more to say on the matter.

I've only borrowed them, Professor. I'll return them when I get my socks back.

sibyllsays @ 2003-11-06 06:46 pm UTC

If you had only asked me, Minerva, I could have told you that he WOULD!!! Severus is KNOWN for his playing favourites and this time I think perhaps he has GONE TOO FAR!!! The cards say there will be CONSEQUENCES!

I suppose none of the other professors (let us just throw out a random name such as Professor Black for example) are known for treating students from various houses with any sort of bias.

I wasn't going to answer the comment you posted yesterday because I thought it was a joke, but now I suspect it wasn't a joke at all.

Perhaps you may not have noticed that the only points I awarded at the Halloween ball were points taken from individual students by your head of house, but I assure you that was indeed the case. At least the first-year-student point exchange encompassed all four houses, and was therefore slightly less unfair.

Are there any further questions you would like to ask me regarding point dispensation, Miss Parkinson, or may we now consider the matter closed?

Forgive my impertinence, Professor. I only felt strongly that if there was some dispute (among professors) about the removal of points that one might discuss the situation with the headmaster or find some other means to resolve the matter. I don't doubt that some (or all) of the student to whom you gave points to deserved them. However, to solely award "points taken from individual students" by the head of my house might be seen as questionable.

I do hope you'll overlook my presumptiousness, as I realize now it's not really my place to question your authority in this matter.

Oh, I agree. After all, the points given were clearly done so to make up for the ones Professor Snape took, and as there were, in fact, ten individual students in Slytherin who had points removed, surely at least some of them should have been given points back. I stand firm in my assessment that your shoes were nicer than Finch-Fletchley's.

You dear boy! Thank you, Draco. Have I told you how marvelous you are today?

potterstinks @ 2003-11-06 09:12 pm UTC

Oh, probably, but who can keep track?

la_pensee @ 2003-11-06 09:15 pm UTC

I suppose I ought to just keep saying it then. You marvelous, darling boy.

As are you, of course.

It's okay. I would have leant them to him anyway. I mean, he didn't have to take them from the laundry.

wheresmytoad @ 2003-11-07 05:51 am UTC

I've got some extra (clean!) socks if you need 'em, Harry. Gran always loads me up with about three times as many as I need.

But I'm not giving any to Malfoy.

just_harry @ 2003-11-07 02:20 pm UTC

Yeah, Neville, it's fine. I have enough socks. You don't have to give any to Malfoy, no one asked you to.
