How I spent my summer holiday
So Charlie and I stay up waiting for Lupin to return from "elsewhere". Knight Bus pulls up, a somewhat inebriated Lupin comes through the door, all is well, we trudge on up to bed.
About an hour later, we hear someone Apparate into the front hall. Now, there aren't many people who can do that at night without setting off the wards, and one of them doesn't have his license yet. We hear footsteps coming up the stairs, and a quick peek out our door confirms our suspicions. We go back to bed, knowing that our visit is at an end, our task done.
Next morning, we wake to find a kit bag dropped in the hallway and immediately send the clothes to be laundered. Then we make some breakfast to keep warm for the other inhabitants of the house, pack our things, and sit down at the table to write a note saying thank you so much for your hospitality, but your husband is home and we are de tropp, as they say. Or at least, as Charlie said. (Did I even spell that right, Charlie?)
But before we can take our leave to places unknown, we are stopped by a very sleepy, bedraggled and finally relaxed Lupin. We explain that our reason for being there is over, as we were really only hanging around to keep him from being lonely, and he insists that we stay to help with the party, and if we feel that strongly, we can use the guest house. So, not really having any place in particular to go before the party anyway, we acquiesce.
So here we are in the guest house, and may I say, it is much nicer than any guest house I've ever been in, certainly. Charlie heads back to Romania after the party, and I'm back to Ireland with houseguests of my own and a family that was actually beginning to miss me. Bittersweet, but you know, summer ends and autumn arrives, or something, so we shall make hay while the sun shines.
(Speaking of houseguests, Hannah and Mandy, will you just be leaving the party with Ernie and me, or will you be coming separately, or at a later date?)
I doubt I'll be doing much posting during the party as there are so many details to keep straight, so I'll make my thank you's now, to Professor Lupin for an excellent July, truly one of the best summers ever. The only one I can think of that might have been better was that one before fourth year, when—well, but best not to think about that now. And odd, that I really haven't thought about that, or him, in weeks. So, thanks again. I hope we actually helped more than we got in the way, in the end.
