(no title)
Mood: calm

A coupla requests, from me and the NA players, that will help streamline our interaction (NA's and Nraged's) and allow everyone a bit more ease:

--please, when you go to post about a brand-new comment or post, we'd appreciate it if you could wait about 5 minutes or so before you do. I know there's always a rush to be the first to spot and comment about a post around here, but that race means that for the players there's about a 3-second turnaround before their post is spotted and reported about. It means they have to be on top of their game all the time, and when you post so quickly about it, it means they don't have a chance to edit or re-work something if they decide to make something more clear. If a comment gets deleted in the game itself, it is because the player changed their mind about what they wanted to convey to you, the audience. Subsequently, the discussion about deleted posts serves really no purpose except to abuse that three-second turn-around time and make us feel like we have to be perfect 100% of the time in order to avoid massive amounts of speculation. So please, hold off just a bit before reporting something, just to give us time to make any changes we need to make. And please, know that when something gets taken away in NA, it will be cleared up later.

--also, for the sake of the players, please don't post the entirety of a comment or post you have read to the Nraged message board. Normally indications in the form of url descriptions work nicely. But re-posting the focus comment itself gives the Nraged readers less reason to read the threads the comments came from, and detracts from the focus of the posts on the game.

Thanks.

Play on,

Aja

can i say that the icon threads are really starting to get on my nerves? it's frustrating to click on a link and expect 54 comments of discussion and find out that they're all just comments on some icon, especially when they make the thread collapse because of it. plus it's kind of rude when someone is trying to talk about something serious happening in the game and all they get in reply is 24 comments about how cool some icon is. its like ml spam or something.

just my $.02. sorry if it offends anyone.

I agree w/ you, the icons are beautiful, funny and well done. But it does seem to take up to much spaces. Maybe we can ask on their personal journals, that would be better.

*clears throat*

Also the multiple posts about just one thing? The three-second turn-around is right, especially when there's suddenly two, three, four posts about the same thing in that three seconds just there. Sure, so you might post and then notice there's more than one post; do something about it, maybe? Nominate to delete one of them?

Also the one-liner posts? I suppose that might or might not tie in with the three-second turn-around in that the less you post, the faster you post -- it's not a race, guys. Surely you have something to say more than just "look! here's a link! wow!" ;) Just food for thought.

Now, if nobody minds, I need to use this soapbox as a coffee table. Ta!

Well, with the three second turn around, she meant that if we make a spelling error it's pointed out in three seconds, before we can ever delete it.

I suppose I just thought it worked as a kind of parallel.

No, I just wanted to make sure that got pointed out as well.

Actually, I rather agree. I find it much easier to follow the commenting when it's confined to one post. That's why I was very appreciative of Aja's request the night of Draco's bombshell post. Perhaps in the future when some big NA event is happening (like last night's wedding), we can plan ahead to keep the comments to one post? What does everyone think of this?

The only problem is that posts that attract lots of comments tend to collapse, and to be hard to navigate through when you're looking for updates. There's a definite point when you'd want to branch off and explore a specific issue in more depth on a separate, dedicated post.

I don't know what a good rule-of-thumb would be, except that maybe we should all agree to think hard about whether a particular issue deserves a new post, and when in doubt, post on an old thread. It's maybe more a matter of restraint, and thinking twice, than strict rules.

I agree. The collapsed threads are really annoying.

This is why I wish LJ had an "expand all" feature. Yeah, I agree collapsed threads are annoying. I still would rather have all comments on one post than spread out among dozens of posts. But perhaps that's just me.

It was certainly a mixed bag this weekend. At first we were to one post, then categorizing to more posts... then all of a sudden it was a mixed bag. The aftermath posting was least compressed (I confess I was part of that) with half the posters not checking the old threads at all.

I would like to point out that I have deleted my own posts if they were redundant... people should do that more often.

Also... to aid in thread collapse, use the subject lines? That way everyone will see when a discussion changes, no matter how many comments are in a thread.

In response to the icon posting --

They're great. I just think that perhaps someone should create an NA_Icons community or something as we DO still want to see them and that way everyone can use a different forum from one dedicated to discussing plots/characterization/theories of the NA story to show off ubercool icons and offer icon-making tips and such.

I'm willing to offer up a code if someone wants to head this endeavor.

shusu @ May 12 2003, 08:17:55 UTC

I think they might mean icon comments? Like, in a post dedicated to discussion?

(parent)

tarie @ May 12 2003, 08:28:36 UTC

I realize that. ;) Just thought that that sort of thing could also be transfered to an NA_icons comm.
