(no title)
Mood: hungry for cajun food

Snape is in The Big Easy (New Orleans, Louisiana, USA).
Armed with C.P. Cavafy for a title again, this time But Wise Men Perceive Approaching Things.
For those who are wondering, Zydeco is a Louisiana music style.

He's stopped calling Cho 'Miss Chang' and now uses 'Chang' throughout. It seems almost friendly, in a twisted Snapeish way.

I love how he's trying to be all prickly still but you can tell that he really appreciates having Cho's company.

He's taking a teenage girl souvenir shopping! Greater tolerance hath no man. No matter what he says.

I wonder about the licensing system here - does a Muggle just wander into an office somewhere, perhaps lost and merely in search of a lavatory, and is handed a license simply for their ability to draw breath?

Truer words were never spoken.

oh I wish it was like that here. They've put up so many hoops recently due to idiot kids driving off bridges at 150 mph it'll take 3 years to be able to drive without someone holding your hand. My province is the most anal in the country when it comes to driving. I understand why but it still sucks.

with a picture of an oversized parabolic curve painted on it

What exactly is it a picture of?

I think he's referring to the St. Louis Arch.

Jesus. Did anyone look up the LaLaurie Mansion? I hadn't heard of it, so I did. I repeat: Jesus. Absolutely Fascinating. Reminds me of H.H. Holmes. I'm curious about the "New Orleans law against cruelty to slaves," though. Louisiana had some strange slave practices, but I hadn't heard of an anti-cruelty law anywhere. Of course, while I've studied slavery (in college, one of the best classes I could have taken), I've not focused in any serious detail on any particular area. Also, more telling is the fact that while the slaves were taken from the LaLaurie's, the LaLaurie's were not punished or forbidden from owning future slaves. Randomly, I wish Snape had discussed the ghosts--cause wizards can see them.

The new poem seems pretty straightforward. Wise men study and pay attention and figure future things out. Very Snape. Did anyone get the idea that the author was speaking directly to us about our speculation? Also, apparently I REALLY wasted my time with the dissection the other day, because now our subject poem reads:

Slouching toward Nyarlathotep
They are assembled, astonished and disturbed
I am silver and exact. I have no preconceptions.
I too have spent a life the sages' way.
Three may keep a secret, if two of them be dead.
For this, for everything, we are out of tune.
And like an instrument that flings its music on another's strings
How long can I let my mind moulder in this place?
On the street, the peoples hear nothing at all.

It COULD work, but it's a bit more of a stretch than before. Plus, the two poems take off from the progression I had going--the poems had seemed to be getting lighter, but last week's was depressing--guess Snape was feeling a bit hopeless--and this weeks' is just rather pompous. Nuts. Guess I don't deserve a gold star. ;)

I visited New Orleans a year ago for a school trip and during a tour one night, we stood across the street from the mansion and our guide told us all about its history. When Snape mentioned the place being haunted, that mansion was the first thing that popped into my head. Thanks for confirming that my memory was indeed correct.

And just for the record, walking on the sidewalk next to that place was scary as hell. There's this eerie, evil aura that surrounds the place.

Man, I'm jealous. I'm dying to go there now. Of course, I'd be scared witless when I got there, but still....::shudders::

I went on the same tour last year while on my band trip!

I have to say that was my favorite stop. That was the first place I thought of also while reading Snape's post. Once I read just the first bit of the information at one of the above links I remembered the whole story. *shudder*

We sat on the sidwalk across the street from the mansion and I remember shivering the entire time even though it was at least 80 degrees outside. The ghosts stories from that tour haunted me for at least a week afterwards.

I don't think my accent that bad. I only even imagine his reaction to someone from Mississippi. No offense to anyone from Mississippi but you know.

Also that house is creepy to walk pass even during the day. I might be over stating it a bit but really there isn't much in the city that does creep me out.

Word to the driving thing. We so suck at driving. Also squee...He's visiting the Voodoo Shops!
