Casey's ego was his downfall.

Maybe Lucius can relate?

Is that from the movie or elsewhere?

Oh yes, much better. XD

Is what from the movie? My dementor icon? I got this picture from Mugglenet and made the icon from it.

Those are bloody frightening.

I know. Don't you love it?

Oh my gosh- I don't know about anyone else, but this made me laugh and laugh. This is the poem that would make me cry as a child, but the image of Lucius as Mighty Casey just seems so incongruent at first. Now I feel a tad guilty... :/

Unless Casey is someone else. Sirius, maybe? Narcissa?

It used to make me cry too! But something about seeing Lucius quoting it and being "contemplative" I just found hysterical. I love his player for doing that.

Also, since this was a Malfoy, I couldn't help but make the connection to "Mudville" as in "Mudbloods" but that could just be a coincidence.

It's possible that he's mocking everyone else, of course. Like, if Narcissa has left him in a huff he could be sarcastically saying he guesses he's like Casey at the Bat and there's no joy in their home (Mudville) and quoting poetry like Narcissa has done. I'd love him for doing that too. But having no idea what's actually going on...I'm in the dark here as usual!

When I read it, the thought of Lucius as Casey made a lot of sense to me... although I think I take a slightly skewed view of the poem since when I first read it, I totally missed Casey's attitude. I thought Casey had been horribly wronged and that the umpire was a bastard for not playing fair. Now that my brain has grown a bit, I can see how Casey may very well have deserved his comeuppance, but if Lucius is reading it and inserting himself as Casey, he may see the prideful behavior as completely natural, and thus go along with my youthful interpretation of the poem.

Also, a little more out on the limb, the actions have a certain parallel to the Malfoy spats. Casey doesn't swing for the first pitches, and Lucius doesn't directly confront Narcissa either, preferring to oppose her passively. And then, when he actually tries to do something about the problem, he misses and gets into a fight. If he'd tried earlier, then he might have had another chance, but Narcissa is now on the end of her rope and leaving.

What does it mean now that his mood is "shiny" though?

I totally agree. The way he's quoted such an American folksie poem, it feels like mockery. I'm sure he isn't Casey.

I can't help but wonder if he picked such a "pedestrian" poem on purpose. It's muggle, it's American, and it's ostensibly about baseball; all of which Lucius likely knows very little. I think there's more below the surface. The poem is all about Casey's ego, which brings about his downfall. Lucius's ego is certainly large but he doesn't seem the self-introspective type.

Ooh. Maybe Casey = Voldemort. Or Sirius.

Ha. Maybe he's saying that without Narcissa, he's nothing more than a poor muggle.

Or maybe not.

I gotta get me an LJ.

Give the Nev an e-mail addy. Will give code.

selene_rain @ August 19 2003, 12:24:00 UTC

The poem is all about Casey's ego, but specifically that he was the only one who could save the day. Perhaps he's talking about repeated failed attempts to get Remus and Sirius back together? Or maybe someone trying to repair his own marriage and failing?

That particular passage is so gloomy, saying that there's no joy to be found anywhere near Mudville. What would have that kind of an impact?

But Narcissa isn't a Black in NA, she's a Peltier. Lupin's cousin, instead of Sirius'.
