Mrs. Malfoy's Gathering
Hogwarts has been excruciatingly dull for weeks and then I turn my head for one second and everything turns lively again. I must say I'm a bit disappointed to have missed out on observing all the action. I have no interest in getting involved in such things, of course, but they would have been amusing to watch.
Most of the girls seem to be excited about Mrs. Malfoy's upcoming crash course in beauty and etiquette. My mother owled me promptly to inform me that I had no choice but to go. She thought perhaps it would get rid of those ridiculous ambitions of mine to pursue politics or magical law. So I wrote her in reply:
I will go to Mrs. Malfoy's gathering, however, not because you have asked me to but because I want to. I believe Narcissa Malfoy to be one of the most stylish, successful, and idolized women of our time and that is why I choose to attend. Her social knack, cleverness, intuition, and beauty are things I wish to strive for because I believe they will help me secure my own goals of some day becoming Minister of Magic or a prominent lawyer.
Why mother I just read the other day in a book, and I shall quote it to you, "I suggest it is no accident that women have reached the top rung (as prime minister in many countries) in a numbers of disproportionate to their strength in the lower rungs. I suggest that it is no accident that queens of Britain have a far more distinguished and consistent history than kings. The evidence suggest that women are on average slightly better than men at running countries."
My mother shall be greatly displeased at me for writing this letter, but I simply couldn't help myself. I do want to attend Mrs. Malfoy's gathering. I only want to make sure my mother knows it isn't because of her. My mother, however, did pay me one compliment in her last letter to me. It was, not surprisingly, also a veiled insult. She told me that she was pleased I had given up wearing black because it was unflattering with my colouring. I suppose she was right. I feel much happier wearing rich greens and reds and blues these days. Father sent me the most gorgeous robes the other day from Italy. The fabric and colouration are simply stunning. However, unfortunately, they are not exactly appropriate for school.

Nothing is ever appropriate for school, such as the other Houses, but I do not see anyone doing anything about them.

Perhaps I ought to wear it. I do have the cleavage to show it off, after all.

Lord, who cares if the Hufflepuffs are too cowardly to show even their ankles? Just wear it. It's not as though Patil and Brown's robes were a fashion lover's delight, and I find that far more scandalous than cleavage.

That clears it up. Should I ever have any more fashion questions in my future, you shall be the first I consult. Really, Draco dearest, sometimes I don't know if I ought to be worried that you can actually tell the difference between actual Italian designer and Madame Malkin's cheap knock offs.

He has such a manly eye for fabric, our Draco does.

The manliest.
Not to mention his impeccable taste in shoes.

And the way he can tell mauve from violet.

I cannot think of anyone more manly than him.

I, for one, cannot wait to see what Mrs. Malfoy does to you this weekend. All done up in autumn colours.

Just don't put any in your bed (or mine), darling. I'm not as fond of them as you are.

I know.
I will keep them in Draco's pillows.

How thoughtful. Afterall, he must like them quite a bit too to send spiders to Ron Weasley and you dead bugs for christmas.

I am sure he bred the bugs from the bananas we sent him.
Lovely boy, he is.
