Hermione, I expected differently from you. I understand you have come to learn that house-elves do not wish to be freed; I should think you would understand that trying to do this is causing more undue torment than not. They enjoy living their lives this way. It is not up to us to stop them.

missgranger @ 2003-04-24 06:02 pm UTC

Percy! Surely you are not condoning house-elf abuse, which does exist, by the way!! What I have come to understand is that there are indeed many house-elves happy working where they are, but I am sure there are also many that are unhappy, and they are the ones I am aiming to aid. Surely it is obvious that house-elves have, in the past, been brain-washed, conditioned, to be happy serving and wearing ridiculous things like tea towels and pillowcases for uniforms. That does not mean that we should stand idly by and allow them to be mistreated!

(parent)

perfectprefect @ 2003-04-24 06:08 pm UTC

I am not condoning house-elf abuse, which is precisely why I am not condoning Spew. Brain-washed or not, this is the thing that keeps them happy in life. Do you suggest alternative brain-washing? There are very few house-elves who would take freedom. In fact, most would consider it a threat of physical violence. I am sorry, Hermione, but I cannot condone this.

(parent)

missgranger @ 2003-04-24 06:15 pm UTC

I am not suggesting alternative brain-washing! What we have done to house-elves is not right. They are not work-horses. It may make a great deal of them happy to serve, but that does not mean we should enslave them. SPEW (not just spew, but S-P-E-W, thank you) exists merely so we can help them secure payments and good working conditions, and perhaps an education, for those elves who wish it. I am quite sorry indeed that you cannot see the injustice of keeping these poor creatures downtrodden, merely so some wizards don't have to make sandwiches themselves nor even pay a small fee for the work these creatures do.

(parent)

perfectprefect @ 2003-04-24 06:22 pm UTC

I will have you know that I have never had a house-elf, and I will thank you not to imply that I cannot make my own sandwiches. If this is the life that house-elves are accustomed to, the only possible solution to making them feel differently would be to plant thoughts in their head. I do not see why you feel it is necessary to conform these creatures to your way of thinking. Most of the people I know who have house-elves become quite upset to see their house-elves punishing themselves. Did you know that? Have you simply taken example from Dobby? Forgive me for saying so, but Dobby's owners were not indicative of the rest of the Wizarding World. You cannot take one test case and start a crusade.

(parent)
missgranger @ 2003-04-24 06:28 pm UTC

I started this "crusade" before I even met Dobby, and I will thank you not to take my arguments personally, Percy. And yes, I'm aware of their self-punishment. This is all the result of lazy, hands-off wizards. Of course it would take a Muggle-born to see what is truly going on. You have been raised to find this normal, when I can assure you that it is most definitely not. Wizard-kind has been doing exactly what you have said I am doing, trying to conform house-elves to my way of thinking. Perhaps house-elves once had their own way of thinking before we implanted these prostrating, self-punishing behaviours in their heads. I simply won't believe that house-elves are meant to be enslaved.

(parent)
la_pensee @ 2003-04-24 06:32 pm UTC

Of course it would take a Muggle-born to see what is truly going on.

Wow. That's terribly condescending of you. I didn't know you thought so lowly of wizards, Hermione. It does beg the question as to why you didn't stay a Muggle if you thought the alternative was so beastly.

(parent)
missgranger @ 2003-04-24 06:37 pm UTC

And dare I add it would take a Slytherin to assume the very worse of what someone is (or, more accurately, isn't) saying.

(parent)
la_pensee @ 2003-04-24 06:42 pm UTC

Oh, I suppose I could only be offended if I'm in Slytherin. It's really not nice to be biased, Hermione.

(parent)
missgranger @ 2003-04-24 06:44 pm UTC

It's not really nice to put words in the mouths of others, either, Pansy.

(parent)
la_pensee @ 2003-04-24 06:51 pm UTC

And dare I add it would take a Slytherin

I did not bring up Houses at all. I am sorry that you can't see beyond the colour of someone's tie.

(parent)
missgranger @ 2003-04-24 06:59 pm UTC

And I never said that being a witch was beastly, but you saw fit to assume that's what I was saying. I never meant the comment about it taking a Muggle-born to spot injustice such as this as an insult. I am sorry that you took it that way.

(parent)
perfectprefect @ 2003-04-24 06:43 pm UTC

Actually, I take offence to that as well. You must admit it sounded quite superior.

(parent)
missgranger @ 2003-04-24 06:49 pm UTC

Then I apologise for offending you, for that was not my intent.

(parent)
la_pensee @ 2003-04-24 06:13 pm UTC

Hermione, you can't be serious. Firstly, I've spoken to many house-elves, and they all seemed quite happy! You say that they're brain-washed, but at the same time you say many are unhappy. This is contradicting. If there are some who can choose not to like working for their masters, then can't it be said that those who have chosen to enjoy it have done so willingly?

(parent)
missgranger @ 2003-04-24 06:23 pm UTC

I am perfectly and overwhelmingly serious. I'm certain that you have spoken to house-elves, Pansy, and that they seem happy to serve you, as they have been conditioned to be. That does not mean that what wizarding families are doing is right, as I've been telling Percy. It is never right to enslave a race of any stature or depth of magic. They are only happy because we have brainwashed them to be happy. It makes little to no sense for such powerful creatures to be stuck using this magic to do laundry and cook meals.

(parent)
la_pensee @ 2003-04-24 06:29 pm UTC

Have you bothered to ask any house-elves who weren't Mr Malfoy's? Have you listened to any of them talking about the good old days when there was more work to do? My mother's house-elf is quite old. She has been in our family for generations, and she has never done anything to merit clothes. Freedom wouldn't be considered an insult to them if it was what they wanted.

(parent)
missgranger @ 2003-04-24 06:36 pm UTC

Naturally I have spoken to the house-elves that work in the kitchens, and many of them refused to confer with me. Of course they don't want freedom. They have been brainwashed by the wizarding world to think that freedom is an insult. We have done this to them, and someday, when house-elves are free again, I hope we are big enough to apologise for it.

knight_to_h3 @ 2003-04-24 06:51 pm UTC

Oh no! It's back!

missgranger @ 2003-04-24 06:53 pm UTC

Don't worry, I removed you as Treasurer. I'll find someone who actually wants to do it.

(parent)

knight_to_h3 @ 2003-04-24 06:55 pm UTC

Who is the unlucky one??

(parent)
missgranger @ 2003-04-24 07:01 pm UTC

Er. Right now, it's Harry, but I'll find someone else soon. Harry's already done a lot to help. He's been really wonderful.

(parent)
knight_to_h3 @ 2003-04-24 07:05 pm UTC

Yeah, sooner the better, he's clearly got other things he'd rather do.

(parent)
missgranger @ 2003-04-24 07:12 pm UTC

Yes, that's true. Oh, would you like your Wronski Feints book back? I finished it earlier.

(parent)

knight_to_h3 @ 2003-04-24 07:16 pm UTC

Ha! Not wonky faints anymore? Did you like the book? You can give them back to me later, I've got others you can borrow if you want!

(parent)
missgranger @ 2003-04-24 07:40 pm UTC

The book is amazing! For a Quidditch book, it's surprisingly well-written, and it has such high-quality photos in it. I'd like to borrow another, actually!

What

(parent)
just_harry @ 2003-04-24 07:22 pm UTC

Did you still want to read Quidditch magazines tonight?

(parent)
knight_to_h3 @ 2003-04-24 07:28 pm UTC

I'm not the only one who plays Quidditch around here I'm sure you can read them with someone else, I've to go feed the Giant Squid.

(parent)
just_harry @ 2003-04-24 07:31 pm UTC

Oh.

(parent)
just_harry @ 2003-04-24 07:14 pm UTC

I don't mind, you know. If someone else wants to be Treasurer then that's okay, but I don't mind doing that and Secretary too.

(parent)
missgranger @ 2003-04-24 07:19 pm UTC

That's all right, Harry, you've done more than enough... I couldn't have done it at all without you. Though now I'm not certain anyone else would want to be Treasurer at all.

(parent)
just_harry @ 2003-04-24 07:23 pm UTC

Well if you don't find anyone I don't mind.

(parent)
missgranger @ 2003-04-24 07:43 pm UTC

I think Ron might do it if you don't want to pull double-duty, Harry!

(parent)
just_harry @ 2003-04-24 07:46 pm UTC

Oh. Okay. If he wants to do it then I don't mind.

(parent)
knight_to_h3 @ 2003-04-24 07:24 pm UTC

Treasurer just has to sit around and count things, right? I can find time to do that if other people can't.

(parent)
potterstinks @ 2003-04-24 07:34 pm UTC

Lord, Weasley, grow up. Just because Potter had a previous engagement on the night that he decided to apologise to you, you don't have to torment the rest of us with that godawful icon every time you comment to someone who isn't Potter.

(parent)
knight_to_h3 @ 2003-04-24 07:39 pm UTC

Maybe you should stop stalking and keep your fucking nose out of mine business before you go around asking people to grow up, you sack of shit! NOW FUCK OFF

(parent)
potterstinks @ 2003-04-24 07:43 pm UTC

No, I don't think I will.

It's kind of hard to stay out of your business when you plaster it all over the school with such vitriol. Everyone's sick of your stupid crying games. I just happen to be the only one bothering to say anything. Even those stupid third year Hufflepuffs were complaining because you kept trying to make them read magazines above their reading level.

(parent)
knight_to_h3 @ 2003-04-24 07:47 pm UTC

I said fuck off

(parent)
missgranger @ 2003-04-24 07:43 pm UTC

That's right. Money, specifically, but you can count other things as well, if you like. I'll keep that in mind, Ron, thank you. It's nice of you to offer.

Wow Hermione, did you really make that all yourself? No wonder you've been in the library so much! Well so much more than usual. I don't know that much html. Anyway, spew sounds really nice, I didn't know that House Elves might like to go to school. Ron says it's a bunch of - well, never mind what Ron says.

missgranger @ 2003-04-24 07:14 pm UTC

Yes, I know what Ron says. And it's S.P.E.W., not spew.
