Current mood: worried

Professor McGonagall?
I need to speak to you because I've become really concerned about the safety of another student. I'm really sorry if this embarrasses her, but I think Lavender Brown needs to be seen by Madam Pomfrey right away. I've tried to urge her to go, but she won't do it.

Could you speak to her, please?

Neville Longbottom

You know, Neville, public attention rarely serves any purpose but to exacerbate an eating disorder. The only difference is, now she'll probably just work harder to make sure everyone sees her eating. Then you'll have absolutely no proof of it. The poor girl is probably going to be humiliated now. Seeking help is something one has to come around to on their own. You can't force it down her throat. It will probably be followed by her fingers now.

I didn't know that, Lisa. If I've made things worse, I'm sorry. Maybe it would have been better to send McGonagall a private message, but I was so worried about Lavender that I didn't even think of that. I decided to yell for help, because it seems that everyone is ignoring what's going on right under their noses! I'm just a kid, blundering along trying to help a friend, using my own best judgment. And that's my point, really. This isn't something that I should handle, or you should handle, and Lavender obviously can't handle it herself. It should be handled by people who know what they're doing, and my best guess was that would be McGonagall and Madam Pomfrey. If I was wrong, then the worst thing will be that I've caused Lavender some embarrassment and maybe complicated her treatment. But if the alternative you are urging is to do nothing, then Lavender could end up dead.

I know which alternative I can live with.

Do you?

N.

Actually, I was suggesting simply letting her know that you care and being her friend. I don't know if you've been reading far too many book jackets or what, but I'm "just a kid" also. I get the impression you posted this publicly because you wanted everyone to see what a hero you're being. I don't see how you suddenly yelled for help. You argued with Lavender at least four hours before doing this. You could have spoken to a great deal of people in private.

I don't appreciate the subtle insinuation that I am half-witted, "N." Why did you not speak with a prefect? The Head Boy? The Head Girl? This should have been handled delicately, and now Professor McGonagall has likely lost any chance to do so, given that you announced it to the entirety of Hogwarts. I notice Lavender isn't around.

I'm not trying to strike some kind of pose! I may have handled things badly, and if I did, I'm as sorry as can be, but I only meant to help! Nor was I trying to insinuate anything about you. I believe you're trying to do what you think is the best thing for Lav; can't you believe the same thing of me?

I never said you weren't. However, I feel you should have thought before acting.

Longbottom, your concern is touching. However, the staff and myself have previously had Brown under observation. Madam Pomfrey is unable to treat a student without their express consent and we had hoped that she would come to see her on her own; failing that, a routine trip to the hospital wing for other circumstances would have been helpful. Brown now refuses to speak to Madam Pomfrey and there is little we can do in that case. Please practise discretion.
