The day that I feared is upon me. Tuesday night, at the weekly meeting between Heads of Houses (in actuality, the same game of poker), I may have made a mistake. Call it my damned Slytherin pride, but there you have it. I knew that I was being goaded, but I couldn't help but rise to the bait. What was on the Menu of Malice this week? My infamous "Isolate Potter" plan, which did not work at all (if you don't count the Hufflepuff Insurrection). Sprout was quick to point out that Slytherin House had yet to serve detention for Potter.

Minerva got in on the ribbing and Flitwick started winning hand after hand (because I was distracted, you see.) The final straw was when Sprout called me a "yellow chicken" and that perhaps the Slytherins were too weak to serve detentions like the rest of the houses had. Of course, I vehemently denied all such allegations. My Slytherins certainly are not weak. However, I may have said that to prove how superior we are to the other houses, Slytherins would serve the worst detentions of all. Well, we can't go back on that now, and to do so would only make Slytherin House look weak.

Then Minerva (surprisingly cruel and vicious streak she has) suggested that the Sixth Years should serve detention one by one instead of with that house as a whole as did the Hufflepuffs and Ravenclaws. So, here is the notice of Slytherin detentions to be served for Potter's lack of acceptable academic performance in his classes.

List
All Slytherin House except for Sixth years
Blaise Zabini
Gregory Goyle
Vincent Crabbe
Millicent Bulstrode
Pansy Parkinson
Draco Malfoy

Good afternoon, Hogwarts.

Professor Snape, surely there must be a mistake here. Not a single member of Slytherin is even friends with Potter. Why would we want to serve detentions for him?

Curious,
Draco Malfoy

Mr. Malfoy,

The truth is that the entire school will ridicule Slytherin House as being made up of cowards and lightweights. I know it is distasteful, but we do what we must to keep our house pride intact.

Outraged

Dear Severus:

I am outraged beyond belief. Why are the Slytherins, my son in particular, to serve a detention for something they did not even do? To be more specific, why are the Slytherins being forced to serve a detention for the actions of that Harry Potter? I feel that my brilliant son is merely being singled out in this manner to satiate some sort of twisted desire your Deputy Headmistress has to torment my Draco. Do reply promptly with any pertinent news, as I am quite displeased. No doubt Lucius will be equally as irrate.

Re: Outraged

You are outraged as am I, Mrs. Malfoy. Surely you are not saying that Draco is not strong enough to serve a detention as severe as one that a Hufflepuff served. While I know that it's an inconvenience, Slytherins are made of sterner stuff.

Re: Outraged

Dear Severus:

I most certainly was not saying or implying in the least that Draco would not be strong enough to serve a detention as severe as one that a Hufflepuff has served. My intention was to merely point out that this 'punishment' seems extremely trite and vindictive. The Slytherins, particularly my son, would certainly be able to effectively serve this detention. I have no doubt about that. My concerns lie within the reasoning. I will make sure to discuss this matter with my husband, but rest assured that the faculty will be receiving a howler from me on this subject.

Re: Outraged

Narcissa,

Unfortunately, this has gone beyond howler status. Now it is a matter of house pride. If your progeny is even thought to be weak then the reputation of Slytherin, and to an extent, your family name will be - let's say - questionable. And we certainly don't want that, do we? I'm sure you probably could pull strings at the Ministry for Draco, however, that will not stop whispers of "weakness" and "being a chicken" from circulating...and then where will Draco's promise to you and Lucius be? Less likely, I'd imagine.

As for cruel and vindictive, that's part of our history. If we are found to be able to "dish it out" but not able to "take it," then perhaps our house is not so deserving after all.

Re: Outraged

Dear Severus:

Your point has been well noted. I am not happy about this at all, but you are extremely astute in your observation. House pride is something that Draco definitely has and I would not care to tarnish his or Slytherin's reputation. Certainly he will carry out this 'detention' admirably. Forgive me; I am merely a worried mother concerned about the treatment of her only child.

Re: Outraged

Don't you mean your only legitimate child, Narcissa?

Re: Outraged

If I were you, Sylvia, (I rue the day that would ever happen) I would do well to mind my own business. No one really cares what a two-knut tart like yourself has to say.
