Current mood: disappointed

Hmph.
There was no chocolate.

I met Dean as requested, expecting a card, perhaps a flower or two, some sweets. There was an envelope, but it seemed to small for a card. Inside were two tickets.

To a concert? No. To a play? No. To anything romantic or date-like? No, these were tickets to a football game.

Now, because of Dean I do know quite a bit more about football than I once did. So it isn't that I wouldn't enjoy the game. But sport isn't exactly romantic, is it?

Then I remembered those giant scoreboards at football stadiums. Clearly my shy Dean wanted to declare his love in front of thousands of screaming fans! How brave of him!

Our seats were fairly far back, but they had an unobstructed view of the scoreboard. The first half of the game was very exciting--Dean is always quite animated when watching football, so different from everyday. But my eyes were trained on the personal messages flashing across the scoreboard at each time-out.

Finally, at the half, a message came across the board, in very large letters:

SEAMUS ROX

Initially, of course, I was speechless.

"Seamus?" Dean asked. "Happy Valentine's Day!"

I turned and stared at him in disbelief.

"Don't you like your present?" he asked.

Gathering what little dignity I had remaining, I stood and walked out of the stands, out of the stadium. Dean followed close behind, asking me what was wrong. Honestly! As if he didn't know!

By the time we returned to Hogsmeade Dean's pleading for an explanation had worn me down, and I broke my silence. I turned to him and said, "Dean, 'rox' isn't even a word, much less a tender endearment!"

"But Seamus--"

"All I asked for was chocolate! Chocolate and perhaps a picture! Apparently the concept of romance is beyond your comprehension!"

"I wanted it to be special! I wanted it to be a surprise!"

"Well, I was certainly surprised."

Shocked, more like. Well, at least Mum sent me chocolates.

Perhaps he thought Rox is your last name.

I can relate. Ron doesn't really get the idea of romance either. But they care - surely that makes up for a lot, doesn't it?

I'm so so so so so sorry, Seamus. I really did think you'd have a good time! You kept saying you wanted to go to a football match, and I thought it would be a nice surprise, since you don't usually associate sports with Valentine's Day....well, you wouldn't expect it.

I guess there was a bit too little of an association...

Um. You, ah....you forgot your West Ham jersey at the stadium.... I left it on your bed in case you want it.

...

I'm sorry.
