Why do I let people talk me into these things?
I'd like to say I had a lovely time dining at the Malfoys'. I'd like to, but I was raised to be truthful.
Narcissa's idea of sophisticated cuisine is apparently drawn from Lileks' Gallery of Regrettable Food. I pity her house-elves, being bullied into creating such monstrosities. Truly, just because a roasted fowl can be enchanted to appear as if it is constantly opening and closing a fantail of luminescent feathers reminiscent of a peacock's is no reason to actually do so. And the less said about the corn and peas in tomato aspic, the better.
I could almost feel sorry for Severus getting dragged off by Lucius like that (what was he thinking, letting that degenerate fool corner him alone?), if it hadn't left Sinistra and I trying to make conversation with our ever-so-delightful hostess. Honestly, there's only so much you can say about wallpaper and window treatments, and if she'd kept on fishing for complements about her supercilious offspring much longer, I'd have had no choice but to trepan myself with one of her hideously ornate fish forks for a distraction.
At least it ended. Which, candidly, is the best that can be said of such occasions.

*cough* Ahem, actually, I think that the roast marinated in 7-Up DID come directly from Lilek's website. Which is why I decided to become selectively vegetarian that evening. Apparently Narcissa was not impressed with the dinner as she opted to sip on her wine. Perhaps we all should have done the same. When it looks like disaster is upon you, drink heavily and hopefully you won't remember it.
