and now that na's gonna be an AU, i was wondering if rowling had killed off a character that was minor in na, such as (hypothetically!) hagrid, instead of a major na character, such as (hypothetically!) neville, would na NOT have turned into an AU? does that make sense?

The only character that would have died in NA would have been Hagrid, but he would not have died in current NA time. He would have already been dead.

Well, it still would have been. It would have been odd for NA to suddenly have an Order of the Phoenix, for example, and also, everything that happened to Harry, and to Neville, and to Narcissa, and so on-- NA is entirely AU at this point. Too much happened.

We'll work some stuff in, hopefully, but some stuff, there's just no way.
