The scientific name is for the wandering garter snake. So Snape gave a snake to Sirius who gave it to Harry, who is disturbed by it? Maybe he talks to it and it insults his glasses.

Maybe Snape and Sirius met up in the travels and then Snape gave the snake to Sirius who gave it to Harry . . . or something.

Perhaps Remus didn't know that Snape was the original source? Much like Lilitou being given to Snape by Remus without Snape knowing?

Hmmm. At first I was thinking it was a DarkArts/curse sort of thing...like Harry was in danger, but now I'm wondering if this is more about Sev's trip, and less about Harry?
