Jo Rowling herself is actually a big Jane Austen fan. Most people know about, for example, the reference to Mansfield Park with the name of Filch's cat (Mrs. Norris). There are other Jane Austen references scattered throughout the books for the discerning reader to find. I think that, for example, Percy's odious letter to Ron in OotP is actually based on one of Mr. Collin's letter to Mr. Bennett in Pride and Prejudice.
