(no title)
i've never really followed na all that much, but i was looking forward to better getting acqauinted this summer. and despite not having as many happysad memories as many in this community, i'm definitely sad knowing it's come to an end, especially how much it meant to so many people.
i also was wondering if someone to help me. granted, i know how it ends, but i'd like to begin again at the start. i've been reading the messages on the na community in chronoligical order, but i haven't been able to read the individual journals in order -- na's friends list only seems to go back 75 entries. any way to get around this, without venturing to their individual journals?
thanks. :) and 'night, na.

I think that's an LJ limitation -- Friendslists only go back about 2 weeks or so.
I've been reading individual journals. I'd be so cool to put together a full timeline. I know there's a history community around here somewhere, but it'd be neat to see it all laid out by storyline, etc.
anjaliesque @ July 1 2004, 20:17:50 UTC There are some amazing nrageders, let me tell you. |
Voila, historic_alley. By going through the chronicles of nraged, you can click links to indirectly travel chronologically through nocturne_alley's annals as well. :))

wow! that's fantastic! thanks a lot, you two. :)

I was going to post this later, but since you asked--
historic_alley is a fabulous resource but only goes back as far as nraged does, which is not the start of N_A. For my own use, I'm going to make a list of every N_A post and put it in chronological order [*]; I'm not sure yet where I'm going to post it, but I'll announce something here first.
[*] no summarizing like I've been doing. The fastest way to do this, I think, is just to go through one journal at a time, cut & paste the date-stamps and the links into a spreadsheet, and then sort on the date-stamps, so I won't be reading the posts until I have all the links from all the journals into one spreadsheet and can sort them all out. I will probably add short keywords ("Quidditch bets", "Trevor the Toad") but that's all.

Gee, just a thank-you will do. :-)
Any opinions on where this should be--not here, I don't think, but a separate journal (what name? chronologic_alley is too many letters) or just my own personal? I'm not sure myself.
shieldkitten @ July 2 2004, 01:37:28 UTC |
I have absolutely no idea. I suck at names.
I'm sure others will have some ideas, though.
myfuchsiahouse @ July 2 2004, 01:55:47 UTC |
sounds like a great resourse! thanks so much for posting about it. i'll defintely be using it once it's done.
maybe order_alley? i'm not really a wordsmith, unfortunately.
susan_voight @ July 2 2004, 12:30:17 UTC |
No, but you did give me an idea--
First I thought n_order, after nraged, but then I decided I should sacrifice the better pun for more clarity.
So it'll probably be na_order (which is still somewhat punnish said out loud) unless anyone else has better ideas. I'll create it tonight when I have time.
laurac0re @ July 2 2004, 06:14:12 UTC |
this sounds like such an awesome idea. If you need any help at all please let me know :)
I'd be glad to help in any way I can
susan_voight @ July 2 2004, 15:38:32 UTC |
Thank you for the offer, but I think I've worked out a fairly mechanical way to do this, that might as well just be done by one person. I'll certainly let you know if it turns out to need more hands, though.

That would be fantastic! If you needed any help, I'm sure many people (myself included) in nraged would be happy to help :)
susan_voight @ July 2 2004, 15:40:04 UTC |
Thanks--I think I've designed a fairly mechanical (but somewhat complicated to explain to other people) way of extracting the information, but if I should need more hands, I will definitely let you know.

Oh oh oh, it's a good thing I saw this. I am going to be doing that this summer, so I don't want you to waste your time. I started it this morning, but I won't get to work on it for a bit.
(parent)susan_voight @ July 2 2004, 18:53:29 UTC |
If you want to do it, obviously it's yours. On the other hand, if you want to dump off tedious work on someone else who was willing to do it anyway and was going to start now . . .
Feel free to email me (susan_voight@livejournal.com) if you wanted to talk about it or compare notes on proposed methods--mine was going to be fairly geeky but, I think, reasonably automated.
intern_alley @ July 4 2004, 16:27:33 UTC |
Oh, no, I'm happy to do it. It gives me something to continue doing after NA is over, which is nice as I'm really very administrationish in regards to NA and having nothing to do is weird.
(parent)susan_voight @ July 4 2004, 18:12:23 UTC |
It gives me something to continue doing after NA is over
Why do you think I was wanting to do it? :-)
(As I said--for heavy posters, I was planning to extract the links from the HTML of the monthly list of subjects, do a little reformatting via search-and-replace to get the date and time stamps into uniform order, and then dump it all into a spreadsheet and tell it to sort by date and time. You probably have modly notes to make this easier, but just in case the method sounds useful.)
myfuchsiahouse @ July 3 2004, 00:46:25 UTC :O |
that's absolutely fantabulous, dear! **in awe** i can't imagine how long it must having taken you to compile all those entries. thanks so much for sharing! :)
(parent)susan_voight @ July 3 2004, 00:47:26 UTC |
Wow! How long did that take you, and how are your hands right now?
(I was planning complicated things with editing the HTML source of the month views, and then sorting by day and time in spreadsheets--did you just cut & paste?)
I am in awe. Truly.
