Music: Stephen Sondheim - Pacific Overtures - Please Hello

Ron's gift: A Nimbus 2000! Wow. Even if it's an older model, it's probably pretty expensive, which has to be a big sacrifice for someone who believes he hates being poor as much as Ron.

He must really love her. That and/or he's working really hard to compete with Cho in a positive manner.

[Edit: In a stergos or philos sense, not in an eros sense. Sickos.

Yes, I'm included in that category.]

And Ron and Hermione were talking quidditch on the train! Could this be another reconciliation?

Except/especially in GoF.

Not that I disagree in principle, of course (my Ron hating aside).

Well, I suppose if one likes Ron "jerk with no style whose only virtue is that he is occasionly a good friend to Harry" Weasley in general, it makes sense they'd like Ron in GoF even more.

Wow, that's a little harsh on the guy, even for me. I take it back. He has another virtue. He loves to play chess.

Ron is a great friend, it sucks being friend with The Boy Who Live and I think he's handling it great in his own Ronnish ways.

Ronnish ways? You mean acting like an idiot?

I guess if you ignore the greed and hate and look only at the good stuff, you're right.

Good heart, eh? Maybe Molly and Arthur could make a few bucks selling a few extra organs they have around the house...

You mean besides the Weasleys who spend money like it grows on fucking trees, that is.

Yes, I suppose I'm probably just being mean about the whole poor thing. B-) (THIS IS THE COOL SMILEY, LOOK HOW COOL I AM EVERYONE)

(Not about the hate, though, he's got poison running though him in the form of a negatively manifested inferiorty complex the size of Clifford the Big Red Dog)

(parent)

altricial @ April 24 2003, 09:16:46 UTC Re:

I don't think it is hate. He has a lot of resentment and side-kicker issues. He is insecure and unsure of his place on earth so he can go either way. He loves his friends and family a lot and this is what is anchoring him from drifting to the wrong side. He's a good kid with a lot of issues that make him very human.

(parent)

notapipe @ April 24 2003, 09:27:44 UTC

Hey! I don't appreciate your reasonable standards and reasoning, lady. That means I have to move from wildly insulting Weasleys to intelligent discourse. This is hard.

He has issues and resentment too which make him a total fucking powder keg, but I was thinking more of the way he treats those he doesn't know or doesn't love. Non-griffindors, slytherins especially, for example, or people with money. He's got a very black and white world-view that's totally insane and very judgemental and negative, due, I'm sure to issues with the whole sidekick and family things, but they don't make him a good person. Though I can appreciate that he is human, it doens't mean I have to like him for having some of our species worst traits.

(parent)

altricial @ April 24 2003, 10:01:28 UTC Re:

Hahaha you started it!

I'm not saying that you should like him, just because I'm like his biggest fan ever doesn't mean everyone should be. However, I don't agree that he lives in a black and white world. He doesn't enjoy the greys, it confuses him so he tries, in his own little logic, to move the greys so they fit into blacks and white to make sense. Which is why he appears to be oblivious and in denial a lot, but it is just his coping style.

He is ruled by passion and loyalty more than reason. He hates the Slytherins because they've been nasty to him, and the Malfoys because they treat his family like shit. Draco is racist in the sense he is against non-purebloods. Ron, on the other hand, is selectively racist. He hates Slytherins but if he has a friend in Slytherin, he'll like him/her and take this friend out of the Slytherin bracket.

He hates rich people because he has bad experiences with them, but Harry is rich too and he's his best friend. Sometimes his bitterness and pride gets the better of him, but when it comes to things that really matters, he comes through in the end.

He just wants his chance to shine and it's not really something to fault him for. :((

(parent)

notapipe @ April 24 2003, 17:12:49 UTC

You brought the reasonability into it, not me! That's ALL your fault. I had nothing to do with that before!

I'm sorry, I don't see why it's better to MAKE the world black and white than to perceive the world in black and white.

While I see no evidence whatsoever that Ron would de-Slytherinize in his mind a Slytherin friend, I'm not so sure that such an action would be in any way a redemption of him. It'd be like someone saying that a gay person is a good person because "they're not really gay, they're just too hard on themselves," which is rather hateful to the person in question, even though it's not meant to be.

As for the chance to shine, I suppose I really can't fault him for that. As much as I don't like/understand the Slytherin mentality, I suppose I should respect it as a valid choice. Grudgingly.

sistermagpie @ April 24 2003, 17:49:57 UTC

I think that's why I like him in GoF. Ron turns more grey himself and in return he gets some see of the black in Harry--and he's surprised by it. :-)

Me too! GoF Ron rocks the house! My Ron-love went totally up after GoF!

I knew he was buying Ginny something expensive with his Gringotts, just had no idea what. Ron and Cho conspiring--I love it. And yes, it is a total Weasley present. Everytime they get some money they spend it on something special for the family, somehow, rather than the boring necessities of life like dress robes or books.

(parent)

altricial @ April 24 2003, 08:33:36 UTC Re:

Yeah! Gof!Ron is very human, I think. I think it is totally cute that Ginny gets kept in the dark by the two of them. Prolly the best birthday gift-- them getting along for her. :D Haha I am leaking Weasley love out of my ears.

notapipe @ April 24 2003, 08:50:19 UTC

HEY! Books are cool!

You're right thouh. There is a really good reason the Weasleys are poor, and it isn't just Arthur and Molly's inability to use contraceptives.

(parent)

slinkhard @ April 25 2003, 03:26:31 UTC

Ew. I don't want to think about Molly and Arthur's inability to use contraceptives.
(Jumps on the Ron hating bus)
Surely the reason the Slytherins are nasty to him is because he STARTED IT!
Oh my daddy told me that the Malfoy's didn't need any excuse to go to the dark side, so I'll feel free to laugh at the first one I meet, despite the fact that he was an innocent baby at the time Dad was referring to.
