Various NA characters have gone without icons in the past.

just_harry didn't have one for the longest time, until someone (probably potterstinks) told him it looked like he was trying to be unique. Then he started using one.

colin__creevey went without an icon for a while to be just like Harry.

I believe wheresmytoad took his icon off shortly after the incident at the wedding, though I could be wrong.

Neville is the only character from NA I've actually friended. Part of that is sympathy, but I've really been admiring his strength and courage lately. I need some of that myself. Hence my default icon. :)

well I've friended Harry and Draco. I simply adore Draco's writing style and his sarcastic comments.
