For a while she seemed to be trying to stick up for Lupin, just because of their past friendship, not really realising that Lupin is completely done with her after how she acted about the Weasleys. But I suppose all the gloves are off now!

Lucius wouldn't say something like that unless he had an ace up his sleeve, though, would he? He wouldn't offer to take it unless he knew he'd come out all right.

It looks almost as though Lucius has backed himself into a corner, to me. He was a little too "accomplished and smug" about the whole ordeal, and with his recent conversation with Harry, he has all but admitted he is still an Eater. Maybe he's grasping for some way to cover for being a little too bold, and letting things get a little too out of his control, conversation-wise?
